Jagiellonian University, Krakow, CITTRU (Poland)
The Centre for Innovation, Technology Transfer and University Development (CITTRU) of Jagiellonian University in Krakow was created in the beginning of 2003. Krakow, Poland’s historical capital, is a focal point for political, economic, scientific and cultural life since centuries. The university with its almost 40.000 students and 6000 staff members in 14 faculties and many more disciplines and specializations played always a role far beyond regional borders. And at the same time it is an engine for creativity and growth for Krakow with its 740 thousand inhabitants and the Małopolska region where 3.2 Mio people live.
CITTRU is organized to crosslink university units, regional business and public institutions. The mission is:
- To promote academic entrepreneurship, the transfer of scientific research results into the market and the creation of businesses based on that knowledge.
- To support scientific research related to and using new technologies, and strengthen the ability to compete with advanced research.
- To coordinate strategic investments of the Jagiellonian University related to the economic and social development of the school.
Promoting entrepreneurial attitudes and inventiveness would not be possible without diversification of activities and identifying diverse problems and needs - ranging from raising funds and gaining high visibility for the University's research to co-ordinating individual scientific ideas and providing business help. The CITTRU organizes a wide range of offers for academic entrepreneurship (e.g. summer schools, conferences, individual support for high-tech entrepreneurs), creation of expert-databases for university staff, creation of the University Technology Incubator. Activities also involve co-operation with local authorities, educational and scientific institutions and business environment (on the regional, national and international scales).
BEPART-cooperation constitutes a chance to strengthen these entrepreneurship-focused activities on the edge between university and regional development and competitiveness.
