Kaunas University of Technology (Lithuania)
The Kaunas University of Technology Regional Science Park(KTC) (formerly: Regional Business Incubator) was established in 1998 as the first business incubator in Lithuania. The intention is to increase the efficiency of research and development (R&D) activities at the Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) and in Kaunas region. Meanwhile other business incubators have taken off in Lithuania, but KTC still differs by size, success and being explicitly committed to high tech and innovation.
Kaunas is the center of Kaunas County (one of Lithuanias ten counties) and the second biggest city in Lithuania with a population of 415,700 and an area of 156 sq. km. The city was founded in the 12th century and owes its existence to its favorable geographic position. Kaunas is situated in the centre of Lithuania, at the confluence of the two biggest rivers the Nemunas and the Neris, 100 km from the capital Vilnius and 250 km from the port city Klaipeda.
The main business of KTC is to support and assist innovative and technology-oriented SMEs as well as start-ups and spin-offs in the Kaunas region. Services include consultancy, trainings and workshops for entrepreneurs, technical-administrative services, better access to international networks, and finally the provision of access to the KTU laboratories. KTC has incubated more than 160 companies (currently in 2005: 63) who have created already more than 470 new jobs. At least similar important are the contributions of KTC to a strengthened transfer of academic know-how and technology into entrepreneurial ideas, initiatives and ventures.
KTC’s BEPART activities are part of its European, transnational orientation, of the efforts to play an active role for regional development, of enhancing and strengthening a so far underdeveloped entrepreneurial culture. A key idea is to foster technical inovations by an improved cooperation of science/educational institutions and business. Within BEPART KTC expects to further improve the range and impact of its activities and contributes into BEPART the knowledge and experience of a larger incubator.
